Why is this a big deal? Well, the right to marry also gives couples the right to divorce. Before this ruling, same-sex couples who were legally married in another state could not divorce in a state not recognizing same-sex marriages. This created somewhat of a legal quagmire for these couples. Residency requirements often prevented couples from returning to the state of marriage to get a legal divorce, leaving many couples wising to divorce in legal limbo.
